His parents are Ismail and Fatima. He studied at Maharajas College at Kochi and law at Ernakulam Government Law College and practiced law for two years in Manjeri. He married Sulfath in the year 1980 and has one daughter Surumi and one son Dulquar Salman. His debut film was Anubhavangal Paalichakal in 1971 which was directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan. He was a student at that time. His second film was Kaalachakram in 1973. In both these films he appeared in only one scene. He played leading role for the first time in the film Devalokam which was never released. Initially he played the role of antagonist in his films. He established himself as a successful actor through the films Sphodanam and Thrishna. The period between 1982 and 1986 could be said as the golden period in his life. He acted in more than 150 films in that time. Some of the films that he acted are Kuttu Shranku, Pokkiri Raja, Pramaani, Yugapurushan, Chattambinaadu, Paleri Manikyam, Kerala Café, Pazhassi Raja, Daddy Cool, Ee Pattanathil Bhootham, Mayabazar, Dada Shaheb, Phantom, Narasimham, Chronic Bachelor, etc. He is involved in many philanthropic projects. He is the goodwill ambassador of the charity project & Street India Movement and Jeevan Jothi, health related project. He has produced some television serials also.
